My son wants a gaming mouse. I am what is known as an “Old” now, so I don’t understand why a $40 Logitech isn’t good enough . He plays RTS and FPS but not sim games.
Target is around the Hondo mark for price.
What you got?

razr has some nice options. I loved my RAT 5 from madcatz.
its might be about having
buttons you can bind controls
too. so ask him what exactly he wants out of it.

9-10 years ago I used a basic Razr, the main things were ergonomics and the soft grip plastic finish.

If he has any use for a lot of programmable buttons, I can recommend the Razer Naga. I don’t play games, but I
use mine for AutoCAD,
and having a long list of commands and object snaps literally at my fingertips is a
huge time-saver. And it seems to be a pretty durable mouse too.

A $40 Logitech is fine. Maybe if your son were a professional gamer he would need more, but then he could buy his own. He really doesn’t need a hundred dollar mouse.
Mainly you have five factors in gaming mice that differentiate them from normal mice :
Resolution, so they can detect smaller movements, but normally any reasonable mouse is enough. Some gaming (and non-gaming) mice allow you to switch sensitivity with a button push to help with sniping.
Response time so signals are sent quickly. Some gamers swear by wired mice for this, though I always hate having a cord. Usually, though any wired mouse, or any wireless mouse that connects via proprietary RF rather than Bluetooth is going to be fast enough.
Adjust ability. Some gaming mice allow you to change elements of the shape or weight to suit your tastes. Normally though you can just buy a mouse that fits what you want.
Programmable buttons. Good normal mice will have some programmable buttons, but some gaming mice come with a shit ton of them. Usually not needed, since you have a keyboard and most games have control schemes simple enough for controllers. Usually only MMO players really care.
Ugliness! Gaming mice are designed to be as ugly as possible with many lights (sometimes programmable) and horrible angles.
In any event, if you really want a gaming mouse, you could try something like one of these

https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Mamba-Wireless-Programmable-Gaming/dp/B07GBYYSMF
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-LIGHTSPEED-Wireless-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B074KL48WC
But if the kid complains there are plenty of ~$30 gaming mice you could stick him with.

I’ve always gone with Logitech for mice since they last me a long time; I still use a Logitech G5 on my office computer since I hate the factory HP mouse, and I think I bought that in 2006.
The only reason that’s on my office computer is because I use a G602 wireless mouse which does everything I want; adjustable sensitivity, some programmable buttons, wireless, AA batteries instead of USB charging, and it’s just all around comfortable for me. I believe they’ve since released G603 and now the G604, so I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these. The G602 mouse I’ve probably had for about 5-6 years with no issues other than having worn through the finish on the primary mouse button. It’s 100 canuck rubles so I think it’s more expensive than when I bought the G602 but I honestly don’t remember, but the fact that I use this mouse basically every day it was well worth whatever I paid.

One of the Glorious ( https://www.pcgamingrace.com/ ) offerings should be good for him. Different shapes and sizes for different hands/grips.
If he has a smaller hand and you don’t want to spend much CoolerMaster MM710 (MM711 with LED) is always recommended.

Got me a razr deathadder, not sure. If they are still making the model but it is wired and it has held up extremely well. I love how comfortable the shape is.

I agree. Thanks for the detail! It's more of a gift for taking care of his brothers this summer, than to start his pro gaming career. He doesn't leave the house though so....maybe?

I too am a fan of Logitech hardware. To be honest, my gaming mouse (Logitech G602) makes little difference in my gaming performance over my M705. The 602 does have the ability to switch resolution on the fly (to change movement rate for sniping) and it has a bunch of buttons which I never use. Perhaps if I played a different kind of game it would make a difference. Of the two, the 705 is more comfortable for my hand. A mouse is a very personal preference. Perhaps you should take him to the local store and let him try a few.
